well, tomorrow is my audition for band next year. i have it during seventh period. wish me luck i'm already in band, but next year i'm going to be a sophomore and...actually, let me explain.
there are three bands:
symphonic band (top band)
concert band 1 (middle band)
concert band 2 (bottom band)
i am currently in concert band 2, even though i'm at least concert band 1 level. the only reason i'm in cb2 is b/c i didn't practice for my audition last year :/ i basically sight read the whole thing. and this year i've practiced and practiced and i'm ready! i'm guaranteed cb1 next year, because there'll only be 8 of my instrument. my band teacher needs 4 (of my instrument) for symphonic band, and he can only have up to 4 in the cb1. well, there are 9 (of my instrument) now, and two are seniors, graduating this year. there's only one 8th grader coming in, so there'll only be 8, guaranteeing my cb1. so at least that's good. i think i'll probably rank in either 3rd or 4th chair symphonic band (if i'm lucky), and at least 1st chair cb1. so i'm excited.
so wish me luck!
oh yeah, and you may have been wondering why i didn't say the name of my instrument. well, we'll play a little game, kind of. not some big mondo game or anything, nothing serious, just venture a guess as to what instrument you think i play. it's not a string instrument or percussion. here, i'll give you choices. is it:
-flute
-clarinet
-saxophone
-trumpet/cornet
-french horn
-trombone
-tuba
-baritone
-bass clarinet
those are all the instruments in cb2, so i do play one of those. i won't tell you how many other people play my instrument, otherwise it could make it obvious depending on how much or how little people play my instrument...
have fun guessing...i'll tell you what it is tomorrow. _________________ puzzle designer. moderator.

okay...the person who got it right was....
pete! i play the french horn. good job.
yeah, so here's how it went:
i had to play the three little passages first and then the scale sheet, so i played those things. two of the passages i thought i did really well on (i tell you what i thought at the time and then what my instructor told me) and one i did okay on. the scale sheet i thought i did alright on. i thought i had missed maybe four or five notes. then i did the sight reading. i did okay (that's what i thought) on the first sight reading passage, and the second one i completely bombed, but that was okay.
so then my instructor says to me "well. i think you did an amazing job. a few of the categories were 40 points and you got 39 on some of them." "you have great overall tone, you have a great range. i think you did so much better than last year." last year i basically sight read the whole audition, i had never laid eyes on it before. i say, "yeah, last year i pretty much sight read the music." he said, "yeah, and it did sound like it. but anyway, you did really good. oh, and i have one question."
switching to a script mode:
instructor: "i have one question."
me: "yeah?"
inst.: "do you take private lessons?"
me: "no."
inst.: "have you ever taken private lessons?"
me: "no."
inst.: "have you ever thought about taking private lessons?"
me: "no."
inst.: "okay, sit back down."
me: *i sit back down*
inst.: "alright. well, if you thought about taking private lessons, i think you could probably do extremely well and no doubt about it, you could be first chair symphonic band. you have a lot of raw talent and if you took private lessons, you could really bring it out. i think you're one of the stars of concert band 2-" wow "-and, you know, most people take private lessons to fix up their problems. but i think with you, it would just enhance your ability. so maybe you could think about looking into taking some private lessons."
me: "alright."
inst.: "okay, that's all. send in kevin for me." (kevin was the next audition after me, he doesn't play horn, though. he plays trombone. it was a day for trombone and horn, b/c we don't have a whole lot of either instrument).
isn't it great? so i figure i'll probably make symphonic. i know there's two people who will definitely be in symphonic, my band director would probably never demote anybody down a band. so that leaves two spots, and i think i could be one of them. i'll find out on may 20! _________________ puzzle designer. moderator.

woohoo and congrats? think. again. i'm the most **** off person in the whole world right now.
i just found out the results today. and guess what?
I'M THE LAST CHAIR CONCERT BAND 1.
i ranked 7 out of 7 people. how the hell did this happen?
let me quote, again, what my band instructor said.
my band director wrote: | "well. i think you did an amazing job. a few of the categories were 40 points and you got 39 on some of them." "you have great overall tone, you have a great range. i think you did so much better than last year." |
and
my band director wrote: | "alright. well, if you thought about taking private lessons, i think you could probably do extremely well and no doubt about it, you could be first chair symphonic band. you have a lot of raw talent and if you took private lessons, you could really bring it out. i think you're one of the stars of concert band 2-" wow "-and, you know, most people take private lessons to fix up their problems. but i think with you, it would just enhance your ability. so maybe you could think about looking into taking some private lessons." |
oh really? well then...
WHY THE HELL DID YOU PUT ME AS LAST CHAIR CONCERT BAND 1?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
i want to rip his little head off and throw it in the dirt. he had already heard, what, about four other horn auditions before me? wouldn't he have the impression already that i would be worse than them?
i can't stand it when someone butters you up and makes you think you're gonna get good news, and that you're the best of the best. well, what the is going on? why would you even think for a single second that it's nice to tell someone they did good, to lead them under the false impression that they're safe and sound and that they're untouchable, they're immortal, top of the line. you're developing this huge bubble of ideas in my brain that i'm better than people, that i'm gonna be in symphonic. and then at the most exciting point, i go up to look at the sheet, and then you take out a knife and stab the bubble, and then stab me right in the heart, a million times over? how do you think i feel? especially when i find out that someone like clinton makes it into symphonic band and i don't?
god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i am so sick to my stomach right now that it is not even funny. i'm about to throw up. i officially hate my band director. he builds this fantasy land in your head, makes you think you'll do well, and then he burns it all down to the ground. arrggh!!!
it was so...deceptive. i feel like just quitting band right now. i can't stand this.
i'm just extremely...mad. and irritated. and all the other emotions you can think of that just makes you want to scream and throw things around the room. or break your t.v. or burn down your house. or kill everybody.
that's all. i had to let my rage out somewhere. _________________ puzzle designer. moderator.
