A while back I acquired a version of a program that is today known as Microsoft Virtual PC. At the time (the version I have was made) it was owned by a company called Connectix. I was just wondering if a) anyone had heard of/used it; b) if anyone had successfully installed a OS to a "blank", yet technically non-existant hard drive.
In regards to B I had some trouble this time around with getting Windows 3.1 installed (as I wanted to use it). Before I have installed it and then upgraded to Win 98 without a problem, but even though it is installed, the Virtual BIOS doesn't appear to be reading the OS.
In any case, I've devised a pretty simple system to fix it. Versus waiting for the boot-disk to load, then typing
C:
cd WINDOWS
win
Every time I want to get on the computer, I replaced the autoexec.bat file with my own (containing the three lines I don't want to have to type in (and nothing else)).
And in case you're wondering why in the world I would be wanting to use Windows 3.1, I grew up with Windows 3.1...and I'm a sentimental freak. Ever since we built our "new" computer out of both old frankenstein-ed parts and a few new ones and had to format the old HD to make the computer run correctly, I've wanted to see Win 3.1 in action, and let me tell you, it's amazing.
Several times I have installed it (to both real and virtual HDs in an attempt to get it to run (one time which resulted in my trying to install Win 98 to D:, which re-routed itself to C:, copied C: to D:, and I freaked, formatted C:, tried to copy the files, and corrupted both HDs -- the only time I've ever crashed a computer (but yet I fixed it myself))), but I've never managed it till now.
I played a game of Minesweeper, and got the new fastest time.
I wrote a WRI file with the WRITE.EXE program.
And I loved every second of it. Wow, this has gone from VPC talk to Win3.1... Oh well... _________________ Signature:
