i looked in the faq and read about them...
but i'm still not sure exactly what the purpose of these is? _________________ puzzle designer. moderator.

The reason i added them is because it is easier to set permissions per usergroup rather than per user.
For example, it used to be that if i wanted to give someone access to the game helpers section, I would have to search for them in my admin panel, and set that permission. If i need to create a forum with permissions for many people, this can take a long time. So, i created a usergroup called "Game Helpers", and set it so that anyone in that usergroup has access to that forum. This means, if i created a new forum i wanted only the game helpers to see, i only have to set 1 permission, as oppose to 20 odd permissions.
There are also a few other advantages, such as the options to mail the members of a specific group, and for the public to see who are in them.
